Austrian Productivity Report 2024: Setting the Course for Sustainable Economic Security

Austria’s economy is grappling with rising costs, a shortage of skilled labor, and shortcomings in digitalization and energy policies. The Productivity Report 2024 outlines twelve recommendations for how the next government can bolster competitiveness and strengthen Austria's economic standing through targeted actions in these areas.

The Austrian Productivity Board hosted CompNet’s 3rd TSI Workshop from 22-23.2.2024. Representatives of CompNet, national statistical offices and productivity boards from all over Europe discussed current developments of a common microdata platform.

The Austrian Productivity Board presents its first annual report with 47 recommendations to the federal government. It urges swift action on the ecological and digital transformation of the economy to strengthen Austria's competitiveness, as well as measures to increase participation in economic welfare.

Productivity report 2023: main results

The recent crises have revealed structural weaknesses that will have a negative impact on competitiveness in the medium term. Economic growth is affected by the limits of the main growth factor, the expansion of the volume of work in low-skilled jobs. Labor productivity is declining, as is the contribution of technological change and innovation. Without additional measures, the environmental and climate goals will not be achieved. Unused potential in the labor market and weaknesses in the education system are hampering participation in economic welfare and productivity growth.

47 recommendations to the Austrian federal government

In its first productivity report, the Austrian Productivity Board identifies key areas for action in economic policy and formulates 47 recommendations to the federal government on two overarching goals. The first is to secure the business location in the long term through the ecological and digital transformation of the economy, the second goal is to promote participation in economic prosperity and economic performance through education and mobilization of the workforce potential.
